Kourabies - original Greek pistachio cookies with aniseed

Traditional Greek butter cookies with walnut, packed with the flavors of roasted nuts, fresh butter and cinnamon and topped with delicious layers of powdered sugar.

Kourabiedes are a delicious treat and the typical pastry par excellence in Greece. Kourabiedes (pronounced: gu-rabi-eh-des) are reserved for special occasions (such as Easter or Christmas), but nowadays they can be found in pastry shops all year round. The word kourabies has its roots in the words kuru, meaning dry, and biye, meaning cookie. It is very likely that the word originated in Turkey and found its way into the Greek language during Ottoman rule.

Many regions of Greece claim the origin of the recipe, and each place has its own version that it proudly passes down from generation to generation. This recipe is based on the most famous recipe from Kavala, a port that connects the East with the West, Europe with Asia.

They go perfectly with a cup of tea or coffee and quickly disappear in a cloud of white powdered sugar.
