Chuao: the first and so far the only protected cacao in the world that can call itself "of specified origin" ! Chuao and its cacao have a long history. Chuao was one of the first coastal towns to be founded in Venezuela. Chuao is now located within the Henri Pittier National Park at the foot of the coastal mountains. It is a rather isolated town that used to be accessible only from the sea.

It is a legendary cacao that, because of its enormous value and its historic, unique and incomparable flavor profile, often has to contend with other beans growing virtually right next door, behind the gorge, being sold as Chuao. The profit margins on this are enormous, so the temptation is great to give other cacao the name Chuao. Meanwhile, these very rare cocoa beans are licensed. Anyone who buys beans receives a certificate of authenticity. The cocoa farmers are united in the "Empresa Campesina Chuao" (Chuao Farmers Association) with 131 members. To join the association, one must be born in and descend from Chuao. This arrangement is intended to preserve the continuity of the centuries-old tradition of cacao cultivation.
