The Kerta Semaya Samaniya (KSS) cocoa cooperative was founded in Jembrana in 2006 and is located between the Indian Ocean in the south and the extinct volcanic landscape in the north. Today it manages over 600 farmers formatted into 38 groups. In 2001, the local NGO Kalimajari joined the cooperative and started the Sustainable Action and Advocacy in Cocoa programme, which led to the organic certification of the cooperative. The programme focuses on gender equality. This has helped many women to move up the economic ladder, who in the past were often only considered helpers, even though they did most of the work on the farm. In training courses, the women learn agricultural practices and how to train other women farmers. Through the cooperative, they can sell their cocoa directly to the KSS and have full transparency and control over their income.
