The founder of TAZA Chocolate, Alex Whitmore tried stone ground chocolate on one of his trips through Mexico and was so impressed by the intensity of the chocolate that he wanted to have it in his home country, the USA. He had a local miller teach him how to make the millstones by hand and grind the cacao beans. Since 2006, he has been producing a chocolate that creates a "sandy" sensation on the tongue , which makes the flavors seem more pristine and natural.
Taza Chocolate produces exclusively"Stone ground Organic Chocolate" . Chocolate whose cocoa beans come from Organic cultivation and were ground on original Mexican granite millstones. Chocolate, as the ancient Maya and Aztecs already made and prepared dishes with it. Anyone who has tried this coarsely ground chocolate will love it. It is unrefined, minimally processed, and as a result brings an extremely strong flavor and an unexpectedly "rough" texture.

Taza Chocolate also roasts the nuts directly. The chocolates are Organic certified, directly traded, have no genetically modified ingredients, are labeled gluten-free, lactose-free, soy-free, vegan and pareve (kosher).
Taza Chocolate knows all of the cacao farmers from whom they source cacao beans, most personally. It is important to Alex that the cacao farmers are paid fairly. He was the first company in the U.S. to establish an independently certified direct trade program. Alex only buys from cocoa traders who are committed to environmental protection, recognize the rights of cocoa farmers and pay appropriately high wages.
Almost all of the packaging material is made from recycled material. The chocolate is manufactured in Somerville, Massachusetts.
